2012 PBIS Parent Letter

(Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports)

Respect Others  Act Responsibly Model Good Behavior  Safety First

Dear Parents,

MJH is participating in an important district initiative.  It is called Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS).

What is Positive Behavior Intervention and Support?

PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools.  It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems.  The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students.  Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student specific plans.  PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all meetings.  PBIS is not a program or a curriculum.  It is a team-based process for systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation.  It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.

As part of the PBIS program, we have established several clear rules for the behavior we expect in all areas of our school.  We teach these expectations to the students and reward them with RAM bucks for their great behavior.  The expectations for all student behavior will be clear throughout our buildings, cafeteria, gym, halls, and classrooms.  You will be able to ask your child, “What are the rules in your school?’  “How do you follow those rules?”  “What happens when a teacher sees you following the rules?”

We will be starting a school store next week where students can use their RAM bucks to purchase items.  We will also have dances at the end of each six weeks for students with NO suspensions.  The hours of the store are from 7:15 am – 7:40 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

We believe that by helping students practice good behavior, we will build a school community where all students have an environment where they can succeed and grow.

We would like your input and your involvement.  Please contact us at school if you have any questions or need further information - 281-0776.  Thank you for your support!
